Wallace: I Feel Happy At Anytime and Anywhere
Three Trees Magazine (A school publication for their 5th anniversary)

Wallace Huo is an amazing person. Sometimes he is extremely self-affirmative and stubborn but sometimes he takes all things at ease. He used to give people an impression of being sensitive and a man of few words, but actually he loves to talk even to a degree of being deemed as a talkaholic. Chatting with him, no matter which topics, you’ll strangely feel that you’re being educated. Although he continuously emphasizes that his experience is ‘small and tiny’. Nonetheless, he likes to talk about his various life principles of what he has been through. Listening to his words and looking back to his career path, you have to admit that his words are a way to reflect his life long experience.
The interview with Wallace Huo took place several hours prior to his talk at the Foreign Economic and Trade University. With black down jacket, peaked cap, a blue scarf, a loose jean, ordinary sneakers, and a dry and red facial skin as a result of the northern wind of Beijing, he casually sited down and crossed his legs – he looked like someone who just came in for tea and a casual talk.
That evening at 7pm, Wallace gave a speech to the Foreign Economic and Trade University, but he refused to use the word ‘speech’. “You can’t say it is a speech or a presentation. That’s too much and I can’t do it. I’m not a teacher nor a professor, I’m not qualified to say something.” He stated the activity in the evening is only a ‘talk’. It’s just a free talk with various brothers and sisters within his position as an ‘ordinary person’ without any ring of light around. He said with a smile that he did prepare last night but now his head is blank. “I’m just like this. I can’t think of anything when I’m off stage. Inspirations come to me when I’m on stage.”
About the title on the poster at that day: A Man Who Turns Hardship Into Scenery, Wallace stated that title is ‘too big’ with his hands waving continuously after he heard of the title. Based on his understanding, hardship isn’t something a person must experience. It’s the same to him. It’s only because he is an actor and has the chance to acquire different life experiences. When the personality of each character penetrated into his own personality, he can have more life experiences than most ordinary people. “Of course I’m not in the 40s or 50s. I’m only 30ish. But I think I’ve had a few life experiences to share with them. That’s fine.” Of course, Wallace also wanted to take this chance for the students to understand him more as well as his entertainment circle. “I hope the students will know that we are different in person than in the screen. We have a life to live. We are working hard and struggling for our jobs. We’re planning for our future. I hope they’ll understand this is also a job. It’ll be similar to their jobs in the future. I’m just like any of you. There is no difference.”
Wallace was shocked when he heard about 500 to 600 people would attend the event. He made a gesture of getting up and leaving the place, “So many people, I better run away.” The room was filled with laughers. Although it was a joke, Wallace couldn’t hide his nervousness of having to face so many people. “It isn’t like my other press events. I didn’t feel stressful in those events. But to you as future leaders of the country, I feel stressful about it.” It had drew some suspicion that Wallace, who gives an impression of not knowing how to express himself, suddenly stated that he would come to the university for a talk show. Moreover, as Swordsman is airing on TV, it was inevitable that people associated that he as the male lead was using the event to promote the drama. Not only many of his fans said this isn’t what Wallace would normally do. It’s a strange thing similar to Linghu Chong acting as the chief master of Mount Heng. Before answering the question, Wallace smiled. Although he didn’t put on the hairband and costume, that smile was a Linghu Chong’s style of smile. “There is nothing as 'strange'. Strange is something you define yourself.” He said with a sharp tone. “I think this is something meaningful. I don’t get any benefit from it. But I feel it is something meaningful for them and me, and that’s enough. I don’t care what other people thinks why I’m here.” At that moment, it was hard to say whether Linghu Chong lived inside Wallace or Wallace and Linghu Chong had merged as one, both of them have that carefree personality in their blood.
Wallace stated he actually is similar to Linghu Chong, being led by destiny. So he can only stay at ease and it’s sufficient just to make decisions at critical points. With his peaceful and tolerating state of mind, Wallace’s learning in the jianghu of the entertainment circle has far exceeded Xu Changqing, the chief master of Mount Shu.
During the 2 hours interview, in order to sum up how many times Wallace had said ‘don’t care’, ‘not a problem’ and ‘don’t concern’, we’re afraid we might have to use a statistic program for it. The way he said those words sounded familiar. After giving it a thought, we got it. They’re the simplicity of that ordinary nobody in “Love At First Fight”, the air of detachment of the extraordinary capable and talented character in “Chines Paladin 3”, the bravery of the paladin in “Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei”, and as well as the easy and carefree of the prodigal paladin in “Swordsman”. He has achieved his wish of ‘growing together with his characters’. The old saying says a prime minister’s mind should be broad enough for polling a boat. But Wallace’s mindset can poll a submarine. Stars inevitably will encounter comments, discussions, misunderstanding, criticizes, as well as accusations. None of these will stir up the moods of Wallace Huo in present days.
This mind training needs a process. Wallace had experienced a period of time in which he went into hiding under the influence of critics. During that period of time he only participated in acting and seldom showed up in front of the media. As such he was given a nickname of “mountain cave person”. The Wallace at that time was so much different from the present day Wallace, in which he mocked himself of having a low IQ while eating his ice cream to fill up the energy level.
His 180 degree makeover is accumulated from the little changes during his 10 years of acting career. Li Yashou in “Love at First Fight” is a turning point. “He only wants to be happy in his life. He is even more carefree than Linghu Chong. Everyday he is happy as long as he can eat, drink, fight and chase the girl he likes.” Li Yashou’s optimistic attitude changed Wallace’s outlook on life during the few months of filming. “I want to learn from him about happiness. Life is short. I’ve have passed 30 unknowingly. The next time we see each other again could be a few years later. Since it is so short, I should live a better life each day.”
Another turning point is his mentor, Liu Kai Chi, a Hong Kong Film Awards winner veteran actor. In the eyes of Wallace, he is not only his master in “Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei”, but also is a respectable elder in the showbiz. When Wallace consulted him about acting what he got from him was advice full of meaning: Every person has his/her own way of acting. You don’t need to learn acting. You only need to learn how to better yourself. Learn how to face those fair and unfair situations. Stop complaining and do your work. I hope you will never complain and start to make things happen. His words came when Wallace was still a young man, and suddenly made him feel refresh and filled with wisdom. “You can demand yourself; But you can’t demand other people. You can’t expect people to be the same as you.”
Embracing this attitude, Wallace started to re-judge the environment he is in. Like he said, think in other people’s shoes. There are actually nothing you can’t tolerate or even say you hate it. Wallace even sees from a different angle about the topic of ‘being used’ that worries the stars the most. He sees it as an affirmation of himself. “If you want to take advantage from me, that’s fine. That only proves that I’m valuable. If you don’t have any value that people can use, it’s your problem. The so called actors, artists and stars generally will care about whether they are being used. I don’t worry about this. If I have nothing for them to utilize, that proves I’m a total loser.” As compared with this, the troubles from encountering troublesome working partners and fans who chase him and give all sorts of strange suggestions are really minor. Wallace has a way to handle them easy.
Troublesome working partners?
“I’ll try to cooperate. Does it mean if I cooperate a bit I won’t have the next play?”
About people who ask for autograph and photograph?
“They shoot you because they like you. Not because they think you’re good looking.”
About mails with strange suggestions?
“I don’t accept because they don’t understand. They only say it based on what they know about the rules of stars. But I don’t mind about it.”
Wallace Huo at present days has a detached and self-affirmative attitude towards his work. He doesn’t mind about not being “red” (a symbol of success). He is even suspicious about the definition of “red”. “Red” or “not red” isn’t his goal for working in this business sector. Thinking of how to make him even more popular to him is a joke. “I know how to make myself even more popular. How about if I run on the street naked? Won’t a picture make headline immediately? But that isn’t what I want: to live a meaningful life.” What is living a meaningful life about? Many people have kept searching for an answer to this unveiled question. But Wallace seems to give a straight-forward answer to this abstruse philosophy question. Happiness and Simplicity. Simple makes happiness. This is the true meaning of living his life.
Wallace lives a simple life. When he is busy, a plate of dumplings and a bowl of soup shall make it. When he isn’t filming, he browses the streets and eats alone. In his normal days, he has a sense of “every hour and moment of happiness”. His interpretation of happiness is also simple but it makes your heart feels warm. “Breathing fresh air, bathing under the sun, browsing along the streets, and enjoying a piece of quietness is called happiness. Buying a million dollars car and living in an expensive house is called happiness. There are different kinds of happiness. But we should make happiness simple. Material things aren’t that important. The most important thing is you’re still alive. You can walk with your legs. That’s happiness. Happiness is actually quite simple. I feel happy everyday. Now I have fans who like me. That’s happiness. This isn’t about the vanity of the mind. It is more about what you say might have an influence on what they think life is about. I feel I’m happy about that.”
This isn’t what a 30ish years old person should think about the meaning of happiness. But to a person who has defined his job in the showbiz as “self entertainment and self enjoyment’, it makes you believe this person is surely immersed in a sugar water like happiness at any time and anywhere. Although you can’t see it, but based on his rising intonation, lively gestures as he spoke, plus laughing now and then, you can feel that touch of sweetness.
This attitude of plain and simple happiness is a precipitation of Wallace’s path up to the current days. Many years ago when he came to the Mainland to start his acting career, he felt he was disadvantaged in front of the Mainland Chinese artists since he didn’t receive any professional training on acting. To improve his acting skills, Wallace can’t remember how much he had done in private. Embracing an attitude of “failure is gain”, Wallace slowly has stepped up the stairs at a bow stance. Once he was worrying but he is starting to realize this kind of worrying is meaningless. “Life is a risky journey. But if you don’t try how will you know it is a risk or a gain? If you think of the bad side you’ll think it is at risk. But the outcome can be different. To do something don’t think of whether it will be a risk or a gain. It’s useless to think that way. It is just enough to know whether you’re fulfilled.” But the word “simplicity” to Wallace is only a mental attitude to maintain happiness. It isn’t a about a one track-minded way of thinking. On one hand, he is extremely self-aware and confident because he understood himself. He insists on his understanding and stubbornness when it comes to filming. On the other hand, he doesn’t mind to make some sacrifices and concessions to make his fans happy. He laughed at himself “Sometimes I’m stubborn and sometimes not. It’s a dilemma.” When it needs to be simple stays simple. When it needs to be complicated stays complicated. But uses a simple heart to confront situations. This is probably the biggest secret of Wallace in maintaining a happy mindset at any time and anywhere.
It is fortunate to get to know Wallace in the present days. Because now he is like a money boy and is more willing to share “happiness”, this most treasured thing, with people around him. “Isn’t it good to make people happy? Happiness is an energy. Maybe I didn’t say anything but if they’re happy to see me such as ‘can I have an autograph’, I’m more than willing to do it.” Wallace ‘s words sound like a promise. To him unless the artists are known internationally, the influence is small. The best an actor can do is to play a character. People can’t see him in person easily. He can only influence his fans. As such, Wallace feels that if his work and himself can bring happiness to people as they chat away in free times, this is the value of his hard work. “This is like doing a good deed.” he laughed, “I’ll be more fortunate in my next life and become an even better person.” Maybe he doesn’t need to wait for the next life. Following his simple way to live and to feel happy about life, maybe one week or one year later we will all become better people. This is an expectation that we should believe in. It is similar to believing the sun will come out from the sky in the east and gush out a bright light. We’ll be overflown with happiness and be better people.
Q: Does it bother you that you’ve been asked questions related to Linghu Chong and Swordsman repeatedly in recent interviews?
A: No. We have our work, they have theirs. Of course there were silly questions but that didn’t bother me. It’s you being silly, not me. Sometimes I think questions from the media aren’t intellectual. But that won’t concern me if you want to put yourself in that shoe. It’s up to you.
Q: Nowadays many people want your autograph. People are screaming when you join an event. Do you think you’re now a successful person?
A: I’ve never though of this. I was just thinking, ah, I’m doing my best to sign. If my appearance will make people happy, I’m willing to do it. I’m willing to sacrifice my personal time to make people happy. But I don’t think I’m a successful person. I’m too far from it.
Q: What type of people do you think is a successful person?
A: In my heart they should be littérateurs, entrepreneurs, scientists, or architects. It’s something out of reach for me. I think they are the real successful people. I can only do limited things as an actor. It’s just acting and be responsible for myself. Frankly speaking, it is about having a good design of your characters and being responsible for the crews. It’s quite simple in comparison. Think about it, an architect can put up a building and a designer can design a blueprint. These are all mighty tasks. They surely can’t be seen (in public) all the time, unlike us who have exposure on the screens. I watched some programs about doctors who make volunteer work in some villages. They offer health checks for free. I think they’re mighty people. To me actually ordinary people are more magnificent.
Q: You’ve set high standards for yourself. If you meet people who affect the progress at work, what attitude will you use to treat them?
A: We artists generally take 3 months to film a drama. The progress is tough. If not everyone is happy, it is a hell without walls. It’s like living in hell and so you must learn tolerance. I think if we can work together as a team, it’s because we are destined in our last lives. If I bump into those demons and ghosts, or people who only want troubles or being selfish, it’s ok for me. Not a problem. I’ll still be happy around other people and he’ll be isolated. We don’t need to isolate him on purpose. It is himself who wants to be isolated. Let him be in his own grief. We’ll still be happily working, dinning together, having fun, chatting, filming together and living together. He can’t influence us. You must have a tolerating heart. It rests on your own confidence, at a high confidence level.
A:不会啊。

A:不会啊。
